Chris Shaffer's Forecast: Beautiful start to the week but our first flakes of the season could be looming

Saturday could get interesting: "If rain arrives early enough, we might see our first flakes in the mix"

Welcome to November. And to welcome you to what should be the start of Minnesota's colder months, we're giving you the gift of 50s and 60s, courtesy of WCCO Chief Meteorologist Chris Shaffer.

But - it isn't going to last. Shocker, we know.

First, let's get the good news out there. Expect a really nice start to the week.

"Today, I think you're gonna like the weather a lot," Shaffer says. "It's gonna be a lot like yesterday, but we get more sunshine. It's gonna be mostly sunny, 56, but we'll have that breeze again. So, if your neighbor didn't rake, and they lived to the northwest of you, you know, yeah - the leaves are coming your way again."

Shaffer says the wind will settle down Monday night paving the way for a pretty brilliant fall Tuesday.

"Tomorrow looks pretty awesome," Shaffer told the WCCO Morning News with Vineeta Sawkar. "Not as windy. I think we could hit 60."

Putting that in perspective, the average high right now is 48, so enjoy those mild temperatures because Mother Nature is changing her mind the end of the week.

"I'm telling you, soak up this warmth because this tale has kind of a sad ending," Shaffer said. "Wednesday, Thursday, pretty nice still, sunshine, mid-50s. Friday, windy, 47. This weekend, a high of 40 on Saturday, 39 Sunday. And I do see some rain showers coming through on Saturday."

And that little bit of precipitation on Saturday could get interesting.

"If they arrive early enough, we might see our first flakes in the mix," Shaffer said. Nothing that would accumulate. It's time."

It is November after all - and this might come as a shock but the metro area is already below normal for snow. Typically, there's about 1-inch that we typically see already.

"So at least when you do see some flakes, if that happens Saturday morning, I guess we're due," Shaffer adds.

No, you don't need the snowblower yet. But you might want to check the plugs and get it ready because winter is still incoming despite another very warm fall. The average temperature for September-October was the second warmest on record in the Twin Cities - trailing only 2024.
