Paul Douglas Weather: Cool weather will meet some rain this week; warmup coming next week

It’s theoretically possible to get a sunburn while shoveling snow. Just sharing.

You aren’t alone if you’re feeling some weather whiplash after the last two weeks. Snow, summer-like warmth, more snow, and now cool weather settling in for the week.

WCCO Chief Meteorologist Paul Douglas spoke to Vineeta Sawkar on the Morning News today, and shares the good, the bad and the ugly which we all should have printed on t-shirts after the winter we just survived.

It will warm up, but first we have some rain and more cold to get through says Douglas.

“It’s coming. We’re definitely in a chilly spell this week,” Douglas says. “Some showers Wednesday, even a clap of thunder. A little bit of rain on Thursday mixed with wet snow up north.”

The metro area will miss out on this week’s snow for the most part, according to Douglas. And two spots either have or will set records.

“85.3 inches, snowiest winter for Brainerd,” says Douglas. “If Duluth picks up another 0.4 inches of snow it would be the snowiest winter on record, which could happen by Thursday, Thursday night. They’re up to 135.1 inches, which makes our 90.3 inches almost reasonable.”

After our rain, Friday looks to be the coolest day in sight.

“A few sprinkles and flurries on Friday on the backside of the rain,” predicts Douglas. “I don’t think anything will stick in the metro. But Friday’s going to be raw with temperatures upper 30s to near 40. Sun is going to be out both days of the weekend, still brisk jacket weather. But in the sun it won’t feel too bad.”

If you’re heading to Target Field for the Twins games against Washington this weekend, prepare to dress warm.

However, the (slightly) milder weather we have today will be the norm by next week. Douglas says the sun is high enough in the sky now that warm weather can’t help but creep back in.

“Next week, we mellow well into the 50s, couple of days near 60,” he says.

Thank goodness.
