Inglewood, Calif. (WGR 550) - It was not always pretty, but the Buffalo Bills rallied late to avoid disaster against a battered Los Angeles Chargers team on Saturday night at SoFi Stadium in Southern California.
Buffalo's win on Saturday stretched the Bills' winning streak to three games, and continues to keep the team firmly entrenched in the AFC playoff race.
"It's the NFL, these are the highest level professional athletes in the world each and every week that we're playing. It's not easy to win. It's not easy to win by a lot," said Bills quarterback Allen while speaking with the media following Saturday's 24-22 win.
Despite the slew of injuries the Chargers were dealing with, they were still not a team to be taken lightly.
"They came out and they played hard. They had a really good game plan," Allen said. "It's tough, because when you're playing a team with nothing to lose, that's a dangerous team. That was a dangerous team we played today. We gutted it out and we found a way."
The Bills got off to a slow start offensively, which Allen attributed to self-inflicted wounds.
"We were just hurting ourselves a little bit, putting ourselves behind the sticks in 2nd-and-longs, a couple penalties that didn't help," he said.
However, the offense was able to establish somewhat of a rhythm after Allen's 57-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Davis.
"[It was] something we really haven't done all that much this year, so it was good to get that one on the field," Allen said of the touchdown play.
Despite rather pedestrian numbers from wideout Stefon Diggs - five catches for 29 yards - he made one of the game's defining plays with a toe-dragging catch on an out pattern on a 3rd-and-8 to extend, what would ultimately be, the game-winning drive for the Bills.
"I told this to him in the locker room: [With the] season, game on the line, 14 is going to be our go to target," Allen said of Diggs. "He knows that, I think everybody in the world knows that. For him to just put his head down, he's been working hard, and it was the biggest play of the game, in my opinion."
In spite of the win, there is still plenty of room for improvement for the Bills.
"Still a lot to learn from. We're going to look at this film. Obviously made some bonehead decisions, if I set up and just throw it deep to 'Stef', it might be a completely different game. But again, just find a way," Allen acknowledged.
While Allen said this three-game winning streak has been big for the team, they cannot lose sight of the remainder of the regular season slate.
"Still some season left, we have to finish on our own terms, and just try to find a way to get in," Allen said.
"This is our playoffs. Doesn't matter how we get them done, just get them done."
