Detroit, Mich. (WGR 550) - As the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft was coming to a close, the Buffalo Bills added another piece to their defensive front by selecting defensive tackle DeWayne Carter out of Duke University with the 95th overall pick.
Over the course of 52 games during his collegiate career at Duke, Carter tallied 127 total tackles, 25 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, seven forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 15 quarterback pressures, and one blocked kick in 52 games played.
As a senior in 2023, Carter put up 41 total tackles in 13 games, while also racking up 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, four passes defended and a fumble recovery. It was good enough to earn him First-Team All-ACC honors.
Carter started 38 consecutive games at defensive tackle to close out his career as a member of the Blue Devils. He was also a three-time captain during his playing time at Duke.
The 23-year-old joins a defensive line rotation in Buffalo that already features the likes of veterans Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones.
Here is what NFL analyst Lance Zierlein had to say about the 6-foot-2, 302-pound defensive tackle in his pre-draft analysis:
"Three-time team captain with undisputed leadership ability to go with his production. Carter is best suited for a one-gapping scheme that allows him to utilize his foot agility and upfield mentality. He plays with bend and leverage but is average at holding his ground against power. Issues mirroring initial lateral movement from blockers is a concern against zone-based running attacks. While he doesn't have jarring rush production, he might be a more talented pass rusher than run defender on the pro level, thanks to his bull rush and lateral quickness. Carter has the ability to become a good rotational piece in a 4-3 scheme."
The Bills will next select with the 128th overall pick in Round 4 on Saturday.
