Bills sign veteran safety Kareem Jackson to one-year deal

Jackson joins the Bills with veteran safety Mike Edwards out week-to-week with a hamstring injury

Pittsford, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - With the Buffalo Bills a bit banged up in their secondary, the team has added some veteran depth to the locker room about a week into training camp.

The Bills announced on Tuesday the signing of safety Kareem Jackson to a one-year contract. TO make room for Jackson on the roster, the Bills have released linebacker Shayne Simon.

A former first-round pick (20th overall) of the Texans in the 2010 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama, Jackson has played 14 seasons in the league split between Houston and the Denver Broncos.

In 203 career games, the 36-year-old has picked up 954 total tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 22 interceptions, seven forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, three sacks and four total touchdowns.

In parts of 10 seasons with the Texans, Jackson put up his best numbers with 559 total tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 16 interceptions, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

While his time in Denver was very active with 342 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, six interceptions, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries over parts of five seasons, Jackson ended up being waived by the Broncos at the end of the 2023 season. He was eventually claimed by the Texans, as he was able to finish out his year in Houston.

Last season was a season marred by fines and suspensions for Jackson with the Broncos. It started in Week 1 with an illegal hit to Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, followed by another illegal hit of Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas, which got him ejected from the game.

Following another ejection in Week 7 of the season for another illegal hit on Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgraves, Jackson was suspended for four games, but later had it lowered to two games following an appeal.

In the first game back from his suspension in a game against the Minnesota Vikings, Jackson was suspended again for four games for an illegal hit on quarterback Josh Dobbs. This time, his appeal to the suspension was upheld.

Jackson comes in after the injury to veteran safety Mike Edwards, who will be out of action on a week-to-week basis with a hamstring injury. Edwards was signed this offseason by the Bills as a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs.
