Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills only had one quarterback at practice on Monday in Orchard Park after Mitch Trubisky was excused for personal reasons, and third-string quarterback Shane Buechele hurt his neck during Saturday’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears.
According to Bills head coach Sean McDermott, Buechele will miss "an extended period of time" due to his injury, leaving Buffalo without a quarterback to take snaps for Josh Allen and Trubisky in the final two games of the preseason.
With the opening on the Bills' roster, it appears former Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos quarterback Ben DiNucci is on his way to Buffalo, according to his agency on Monday.
Allen had to take all the reps on Monday, but quality control coach Kyle Shumur made some throws during drills as well. Shumer played quarterback in college for Vanderbilt, and also was in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs.
Following practice, I asked Khalil Shakir if Allen was tired by the end of practice, which was not cut short.
"Josh is a dog. That’s him. That’s Josh Allen right there. I don’t think he’s tired at all," said Shakir on Monday.
Returning to practice on Monday were running back Ty Johnson, wide receivers Mack Hollins and Justin Shorter, as well as linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio.
Not practicing were wide receivers Chase Claypool and Bryan Thompson, safeties Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop, offensive lineman Travis Clayton, pass rusher Casey Toohill, linebacker Nick Morrow, and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones.
After Saturday’s loss to the Bears, McDermott was upset that his team didn’t play up to its standard.
"There was a lot in that game, and I think the biggest thing is really continuing to try and make sure that the people that haven’t been here understand how we do things, what the expectation level is and what the standard is. It’s not as much the result as it is what leads to the result," said McDermott.
Saturday was the first game Bobby Babich called the defense, and McDermott felt things went well overall.
"We reviewed the game, and there’s always going to be lessons baked into it," the head coach said of his new defensive coordinator. "There’s always going to be plays that a play caller himself, that we disagree with, and those are good, healthy conversations. Bobby’s wired in such a way that he welcomes those, and can handle direct conversations and truth. I thought he did a really good job in a lot of areas, and knowing him, he’s going to learn from the few he wants back."
We’ve reached the point of the season where I can’t get too specific with what I saw on the field from practice.
What I can tell you, though, is Keon Coleman had another circus catch that he had to go up for. Coleman also has been very good in this camp at adjusting to passes to make the catch.
Allen had a perfect long touchdown to tight end Zach Davidson, who continues to impress this training camp and preseason.
The defense also had two big interceptions of Allen. Linebacker Baylon Spector took one back for a touchdown, while safety Damar Hamlin had the other.
