McDermott: Preparation will drive Bills to goals against 49ers

Bills head coach Sean McDermott joined the "Extra Point Show" ahead of this weekend's massive showdown with the defending NFC champions in Orchard Park

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - After getting a week off for the bye, the Buffalo Bills are back in action this weekend, as they head into the home stretch of the 2024 season.

The final six-game stretch starts on Sunday night when the Bills host the defending NFC champion the San Francisco 49ers at Highmark Stadium.

Heading into Sunday's contest in prime-time, the Bills have a chance to do something no team has yet to accomplish this season: Win their division title. With a victory, the Bills would clinch their fifth-straight AFC East title, a feat the team has never done in its history.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott feels that possibility this Sunday is one of the markers that will lead the team to its ultimate goal.

"We also want to recognize, chances to and opportunities to achieve goals," said McDermott on Friday during his weekly appearance on the "Extra Point Show" on WGR. "We're aware of that, and again, what drives that is our preparation."

Injuries continue to be a headline for the Bills ahead of Sunday night's contest, with the team actually starting to get healthier.

McDermott has ruled out tight end Dalton Kincaid for a second-straight game due to a knee injury suffered a few weeks back in Indianapolis against the Colts.

However, the big injury news of the week has been a positive one, as veteran linebacker Matt Milano is nearing a possible return this week from a torn bicep muscle just before the start of the regular season. Milano has not played a game for the Bills since October of 2023 when he suffered a season-leg injury in London in a Week 5 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Also considered questionable to play Sunday with Milano includes defensive tackle DeWayne Carter and wide receiver Keon Coleman.

Meanwhile, the Bills will be preparing for a pair of quarterbacks going into Sunday's matchup.

49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy missed last week's game against the Green Bay Packers with a right shoulder injury, and was limited throughout practice this week. He is officially listed as questionable for Sunday night's game.

If Purdy is not able to play against the Bills, it will be backup Brandon Allen facing the Bills.

McDermott is making sure his team is staying focused on what they can control.

"They do a really good job of holding their cards close to the vest. I think they did the same the week prior," McDermott said with Sal Capaccio. "We're really just focused on ourselves and our level of play, and making sure we're ready to go."

Kickoff on Sunday is slated for 8:20 p.m. EST, and you can hear all of the play-by-play action on the official voice of the Bills - WGR Sports Radio 550 - with Chris Brown, Eric Wood and Sal on the call.
