McDermott: A huge difference playing in front of Bills fans

Bills head coach Sean McDermott spoke with the media after clinching a fifth-straight AFC East title with a win over the 49ers

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - For a fifth-straight season, the Buffalo Bills sit atop the AFC East.

Buffalo secured another division title on Sunday night with a 35-10 win over the San Francisco 49ers on "Sunday Night Football" at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. This will be the seventh season in Sean McDermott's tenure as head coach in Buffalo that his team will play in the NFL Playoffs.

With the win, the Bills now will have, at least, one home playoff game and the potential for more. McDermott knows no matter how things unfold come playoff time, the connection between the organization and the fanbase is a special one.

"I think this place is starting to become a place around the NFL now that people come, and they see this and they're going, 'I want to be a part of this,'" said McDermott while addressing the media following the win.

With lots of lake effect snow coming down Sunday night, the running game was huge for the Bills in the win. Running back James Cook led all running backs with 14 carries for 107 yards, and a 65-yard touchdown to give the Bills a 14-3 lead in the second quarter.

McDermott felt with the conditions, the game was going to be won at the line of scrimmage.

"Offensively, to be able to run that football the way we did when they knew we were going to run it because of the conditions in particular, I thought James' run was, at the early part of the second quarter, huge in terms of opening it up. Being able to score on that was huge," McDermott said.

With the Bills sitting as division champions once again, McDermott and the rest of the team will enjoy these moments for now, but be ready to come back for the next game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.

The next goal for the Bills, at this point, is to shoot for the No. 1 seed in the AFC, which comes with an all-important first-round bye. McDermott feels it will be their level of play every week heading into the final stretch of the season that's important.

Kickoff between the Rams and Bills is slated for 4:25 p.m. EST next Sunday on the official voice of the Bills - WGR Sports Radio 550.
