Edmonton, Alberta (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Sabres emerged victorious in what was a wild night of hockey on Tuesday. Visiting the Edmonton Oilers, the blue and gold recovered from a disastrous third-period collapse thanks to Alex Tuch, who played hero in overtime at Rogers Place.
The Sabres took the lead, on a powerplay, with just under a minute left in the first period. Captain Rasmus Dahlin's point shot was tipped in front by Josh Doan, who was credited with his ninth goal of the season.
The aforementioned powerplay was due to a goaltender interference infraction against Oilers forward David Tomasek. He and Colten Ellis collided very hard; hard enough for Ellis to be called off the ice following Doan's goal. Enter Alex Lyon, who came in relief for a second-consecutive night.
In the middle stanza, it was all Buffalo. The team overcame a deflating overturned call along the way, too.
Midway through the second, Tage Thompson scored his 14th goal of the campaign, as he shoved the puck home while posted up to the left of Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner. However, the goal was wiped off the board when officials went to replay, and realized they missed calling an earlier stoppage due to a glove pass.
At the 11:03 mark, though, Thompson proved the puck doesn't lie. He picked the pocket of Edmonton defenseman Evan Bouchard, and netted his 14th goal for real this time.
Less than a minute later, Doan struck for a second time on a man advantage. This one, in particular, was a beauty. After receiving a pass from Thompson, Doan went between his legs to reach double-digit goals in 2025-26 and made it a 3-0 Sabres advantage in the process.
For as strong as the Sabres played in the second, the Oilers matched the intensity in the third and roared all the way back.
The comeback began just 10-seconds into the frame, when Connor McDavid brought Rogers Place to life with his 15th goal of the campaign. Less than two-minutes later, forward Vasily Podkolzin followed suit and made it a 3-2 contest with his sixth goal.
Buffalo weathered the storm from there; that is, until legitimately the last-second. McDavid tied the game at three goals apiece, with 1.7-seconds left in regulation. The gut-punch of all gut punches forced overtime in Edmonton.
Fortunately for the Sabres, the team righted the ship in the extra period. It took just 33-seconds for Alex Tuch to reverse the fortune, and lay to rest any hopes for the Oilers to put the cherry on top of the comeback.
