Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) – Sportsnet in Canada has a weekly podcast called, “31 Thoughts: The Podcast" hosted by Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman. When talk of the Buffalo Sabres came up on Tuesday's edition of the podcast, Friedman thinks the Sabres could have more than one pick in the first round of this year’s NHL Draft.
“Someone told me this week, do not be surprised if Buffalo ends up with another pick high in the draft," Friedman said.
“I don’t know if that means [Jack] Eichel, I don’t know if that means [Sam] Reinhart, because both of them could potentially bring that, but somebody said to me watch some of the teams that are picking high and Buffalo.”
Friedman and Marek speculated about the Anaheim Ducks at third overall, the Columbus Blue Jackets at No. 5 and the Los Angeles Kings with the eighth pick. Friedman maintained that the Kings are not in on Eichel, but could be in on Reinhart.
Being from Vancouver, Reinhart wants to be traded to a team out west. His dad, Paul Reinhart, played for the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks. His brother Max also played for Calgary.
As far as the coach search goes, I think it makes a lot of sense that Kevyn Adams hasn’t named a coach yet. Chances are good that Don Granato will remain as the Sabres head coach, but I think the Sabres general manager is waiting to see what happens with Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour. Brand’Amour wants his assistants to be taken care of, and that hasn’t happened yet.
It also looks like the Hurricanes are not going to re-sign defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who has been given permission to talk to other teams about a trade.
Brind’Amour can’t be happy about that.
Adams won a Stanley Cup with Brind’Amour in Carolina in 2006, and he'd know exactly what he’d be getting behind the bench.
