Sabres sign 2023 second-round pick Anton Wahlberg to entry-level deal

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Sabres announced on Friday the signing of 2023 second-round pick Anton Wahlberg to his three-year entry-level contract.

Wahlberg is the first Sabres draft pick from the 2023 draft class to sign his rookie contract.

The 18-year-old was the 39th overall selection for the Sabres in Round 2 of the 2023 NHL Draft after playing 17 games last season in the Swedish Hockey League with the Malmö Redhawks. Playing primarily as a 17-year-old, Wahlberg tallied four points (2+2) in Sweden's top professional level.

While playing with Malmö's J20 Nationell team, Wahlberg scored 14 goals and added 13 assists for 27 points in 32 games.

The Malmö native made his debut in the SHL during the 2021-22 season as a 16-year-old.

The 6-foot-3, 192-pound forward is expected to spend next season back in Sweden playing full-time with the Redhawks, while also competing for a chance to represent Sweden when the nation hosts the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Gothenberg.

Elite Prospects lists Wahlberg as being under contract with Malmö through the 2023-24 season.
