It was a scene straight out of Red Sox hell. On Wednesday afternoon in Toronto, Clay Buchholz took the hill for the Blue Jays and squared off against former Sox disaster Drew Pomeranz. And if the memories couldn't get any more horrifying, Pablo Sandoval was batting sixth for San Francisco.
As a proverbial slap in the face, Sandoval homered in the fifth inning, giving the Giants a 2-0 lead. The Panda has been resurgent this season, hitting .333 with an OPS north of 1.000. Finally, he seems to be earning that $19 million annual salary.
Too bad he's playing for the Giants, who are paying him a cool $555,000.

Though it's hard to believe, Buchholz did post a respectable 3.96 ERA in parts of 10 seasons in Boston. He won 17 games in 2010 and put up a 1.74 ERA in the first half of 2013. If it weren't for the injuries, and his interminably slow pace, maybe Buchholz would even be remembered somewhat fondly around here (he did receive a tribute video, after all).
In the end, Pomeranz wound up winning this duel, tossing six shutout innings. His ERA on the season is now 3.65.
How come we can't get players like that?
