Patriots running back Sony Michel dealt with knee issues multiple times during his rookie season and that trend is apparently continuing into his sophomore campaign.
Despite the late start and the knee issues, Michel rushed for 931 yards on 209 carries (4.5 avg.) with six touchdowns while starting eight of 13 games played last fall.
He was even more impressive in the postseason, serving as arguably the most consistent key cog in the Patriots offense during its three-game run to a Super Bowl ring. In those three wins over the Chargers, Chiefs and Rams, Michel carried the ball 71 times for 336 yards (4.7 avg.) while matching his regular season total with another six touchdowns.
Michel has dealt with knee injuries dating back to his time at Georgia, but that didn’t keep the Patriots from making him a somewhat surprising selection with the final pick of the first round a year ago.
Missing time this spring isn’t necessarily a huge deal at this point, although it could hinder Michel’s development in the passing game, where he was essentially a non-factor as a rookie. Beyond durability, it’s the area of Michel’s game with the greatest room for growth as he heads toward his second season.
