Red Sox look for pitching early in Day 3 of MLB draft

Day 3 of the MLB Draft is underway and the Red Sox took a different direction than just a day prior. After selecting high school players with their first two picks, Dave Dombrowski and company went with players at the college level with their next eight picks.  Wednesday is proving to be a different story as the Sox have tapped back into the high school leve,l while also taking an increased amount of pitchers.

Round 11

The Red Sox selected Nicholas Northcut with the 340th overall pick. Northcut is a right-hander out of William Mason high school in Ohio and this year’s Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year. The 18-year-old has been heralded as a two-way talent -- his fastball reaches the low 90s, but the promise he’s shown as a hitter makes him an even more enticing prospect. Northcut is currently a Vanderbilt commit.

Round 12

Chase Shugart became the Red Sox’ 12th round pick at No. 370 overall. Shugart is a right-handed pitcher in his junior year for one of the nation's top teams, the Texas Longhorns. The Texas-native owns a 5-3 record for the Longhorns this season, throwing 84 2/3 innings (the second-highest on the team). Shugart has posted a 3.46 ERA this season to go along with 58 strikeouts and two saves.

Round 13

Dylan Hardy, a junior out of the University of Southern Alabama, was selected by the Red Sox with the No. 400 overall pick. The outfielder leads the Southern Alabama Jaguars with a .331 batting average this season and has also started every single one of his team’s 57 games this season. Hardy was good for 27 RBI’s and four home runs, while leading his team with 19 stolen bases. He was solid defensively as well, posting a perfect fielding percentage this season with 109 putouts. 

Round 14

The Red Sox went back to the high school level for pick No. 430 with Nicholas Lucky out of Cocalico High School in Pennsylvania. The second basemen has a big frame at 6 feet and 185 pounds. According to MaxPreps, Lucky batted .541 in 20 games for his high school this year while adding 25 RBI’s and four home runs.

Round 15

Andrew Politi, a right-handed pitcher out of Seton Hall, was pick No. 460 of the MLB draft. The junior was named to the Big East Championship All-Tournament Team this season. He started six games for the Pirates but appeared in 17, posting a 5-4 record which was good for the second-highest numbers of wins on the team. Politi boasted a 5.44 ERA and a team-high 67 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .203 against him this season.
