The Celtics made the right decision, but it looks like Jaylen Brown is going to bet on himself.
Boston has offered Brown a contract extension, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports — after there’d been speculation the C’s wouldn’t offer such a deal. The offer is good for four years to the tune of $80 million.
If Brown were to take the offer, his average annual value ($20 million) would surpass Nets guard Caris LeVert ($17.5 million) but put him well below Jamal Murray ($33.9 million), both of which were selected after the Celtics wing in the 2016 NBA Draft.
But Brown isn’t settling.
According to Haynes, Brown is “pursuing a bigger offer,” because he believes he can take the next step as a player.
The Celtics did their due diligence. If Brown develops like he expects to, Boston benefit. If he doesn’t, the Celtics still come out in a decent spot — because they’ll have avoided an extension with a player who wasn’t necessarily worth the investment.
