Leo Lopez, a spokesperson for David Ortiz, has told ESPN that the former Red Sox star underwent "exploratory" surgery at Mass General Monday night/Tuesday morning. The procedure lasted until 1 a.m. and resulted in Ortiz resting in stable condition.
ESPN reports that Ortiz is still in intensive care, but that doctors do expect a full recovery.
He has been alert and talking with his family.
Ortiz was transported Monday night from Santo Domingo to Boston where he was immediately taken to Mass General, arriving at the hospital just after 10 p.m.
