The Jacoby Ellsbury era in the Bronx has come to a close after the Yankees released the 36-year-old Wednesday night.
Ellsbury had one more year left on his seven-year, $153 million deal with New York meaning the Yankees are still on the hook for the $21,142,857.15 he was owed for 2020 along with a $5 million buyout that was put in place for 2021 when the outfielder would have carried a team option for $21 million.
Due to a variety of injuries, Ellsbury hasn't played in the majors since 2017 when he totaled 112 games. In total, he played in 520 games for the Yankees totaling a combined .264 batting average and .716 OPS, hitting 39 home runs and stealing 102 bases. New York went 280-240 in regular-season games he played in.
Ellsbury never recaptured the level of performance turned in during the 2011 season when he hit .321 with a .921 OPS, 32 homers and 39 stolen bases.
