On Wednesday, Mookie Betts agreed to a massive 12-year, $365 million extension with the Dodgers.
The right fielder was traded to the Dodgers this offseason as it seemed he and the Red Sox could not agree on a long-term extension as he would have been a free agent after this season.
On Ordway, Merloni & Fauria Wednesday, Lou Merloni said he believes if Chaim Bloom were the Red Sox general manager the last few years and not just this offseason, the team would have found a way to keep Betts.
“I think if Chaim Bloom were here a couple years prior, I think Mookie would still be here because I think there would be a lot more creativity than (Dave) Dombrowski’s way of being like, ‘Nope. Just keep paying everybody and keeping everybody around.’ You could have gotten creative," Merloni said. "You could have sat there and say, ‘Listen, Chris Sale is dominant for six months, we’ll pay him ace money. I mean we basically did anyways. We gave the kid $30 million.’ You could have waited on that. (Nathan) Eovaldi, I think he’s more creative. He could have found another guy. You could have kept Mookie and you could have traded Jackie (Bradley Jr.). You’d save $12 million there. You could have been more creative to keep the best player on your baseball team.
