How will Patriots go about replacing Matt Patricia?

One person is not going to replace Matt Patricia.

A few weeks back, it was reported the Patriots will not have an official defensive coordinator to fill Matt Patricia's spot, but linebackers coach Brian Flores would likely be calling the plays.

This is the typical approach the Patriots take with elevating coaches to coordinator positions.

Speaking at the NFL coaches breakfast on Tuesday in Orlando, Bill Belichick wouldn't confirm the report, but did say it will take multiple people to help replace him.

"I think everybody on the defensive staff will take on additional responsibilities," Belichick said to reporters. "We haven't really added anybody to the defensive staff. Not saying we won't or will, but I'd say everybody's responsibilities are going to match their spot. Matt did a lot for us — obviously did a great job. Those [responsibilities] will be shared by multiple people on the defensive staff."

Belichick did offer praise of Flores, who seems likely to be given the official title in a year or two, just like what happened with Patricia at the start of his run as defensive coordinator.

"He's done a lot of different things for us and done them all well," Belichick said. "He's gained a lot of experience. He's a quality person, quality coach with a lot of experience."

The coach was also asked about former Arkansas coach Bret Bielema, who was spotted with members of the Patriots staff at the combine as well as at recent pro days, but Belichick said the team will have formal and final staff announcements later in the spring.
