Nick Caserio says Patriots will add third QB, but who remains big question

Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer, quarterback X.

That is what the Patriots will go into the summer with at the quarterback position, but who the third quarterback will be remains a big question.

Speaking following Day 2 of the NFL Draft, Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio confirmed they will add another quarterback, but he did not say whether that would come via Day 3 of the draft, a trade, or free agent signing.

"You can only pick so many players," he said. "Four of them went off the board in the first round yesterday. (Jalen) Hurts went off in this round (second round). There are still some players I think that have a possibility of ending up on this team. We have the picks sort of spread out tomorrow, but there are different ways you can get the players. We're going to have a third quarterback on our roster — pair them up with Jarrett (Stidham) and Brian (Hoyer). Those guys are working hard and started the offseason program. Both are in our program.

"We're going to have a player here at that position. Where he comes from or how he gets here is sort of yet to be determined, but there are a few guys that we like and we feel comfortable with. Now, it's just a matter of how we get them on the team."

After four QBs were selected in the first round, just Hurts was selected on Friday, which leaves a few decent options still available to start Day 3. Those include Jake Fromm, Jacob Eason and then other potential late-round options. Right now, the Patriots do not have a fourth-round selection, so if they want Fromm or Eason, they may need to trade up.

And while everyone expects the Patriots to select a quarterback at some point in the draft, they don't have to. They can always address the situation with a veteran, although that scenario would likely mean that player would be the starter and not Stidham.

Jameis Winston and Cam Newton both remain available as free agents, and then Andy Dalton could be traded at any moment -- so, it's not like there aren't any veterans available. And even beyond those three, there are some lesser-known veterans still looking to latch on to teams.

Bottom line, the Patriots will add another quarterback at some point, but no one really knows how.

Maybe not even the Patriots.
