By all accounts, the Patriots had a pretty solid draft.
They made a number of trades, including out of the first round, but picked up several other selections along the way and were able to add some talented players in the first three rounds, who should make immediate impacts.
With that being said, the team did not add any wide receivers, which was a little surprising to NBC Sports' Peter King.
“I’m pretty much mystified by that,” he said on the latest edition of NBC Sports Boston's The Michael Holley Podcast. “Look at where the game is going. Last year, the 49ers with the 36th pick in the draft take (wide receiver) Deebo Samuel. You watched the Super Bowl, he’s one of the five best players on the field in the Super Bowl. And now you look this year, and they trade up from 31 to go get Brandon Aiyuk (at No. 25), another receiver they felt was the best all-around receiver this year in the draft … So, they have expended great draft capital in the last couple of years on the receiver position, and that to me is where the game is going.”
The Patriots did select N'Keal Harry in the first round last year and undrafted rookie Jakobi Meyers was on the team all year, so there is some youth at the position.
Right now, the team has Julian Edelman, Harry, Mohamed Sanu, Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, Damiere Byrd, Quincy Adeboyejo, Marqise Lee, , Devin Ross, Will Hastings, Sean Riley, Isaiah Zuber and Jeff Thomas on the wide receiver depth chart.
