Rodney Harrison: Cam Newton will make Patriots players forget Tom Brady

When it comes to the Patriots, the biggest story of the offseason was obviously Tom Brady signing with Tampa Bay as a free agent.

The following months were trying to hype Jarrett Stidham up as his replacement, but then the team officially added Cam Newton earlier this month. Expectations completely changed as now the team is viewed as almost a lock to make the playoffs and considered one of the better teams in the league again.

When it comes to inside the locker room among players, NBC analyst and former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison believes the addition of Newton has them already forgetting about Brady.

"As a player, think about it -- if I'm Devin McCourty and I just lose Tom Brady and all of a sudden in the offseason I'm like, 'What the heck is this Jarrett Stidham gonna do? As a defense, do we really have to be the No. 1 defense in the league to win now?'" he said on Pro Football Talk. "Then all of a sudden Cam Newton signs, you're like, 'Holy crap. We have a legitimate chance. Like, we can win this division.' You automatically forget about Tom Brady and you feel like you can give yourself a really legitimate chance of winning that division and getting back into the playoffs and having success."

Newton will compete with Stidham for the starting job, but it is likely as long as he proves he's healthy it will be his.

The 2015 NFL MVP signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the team that is worth up to $7.5 million.
