Stephon Gilmore recounts dominant performance vs. Giants

FOXBOROUGH -- Stephon Gilmore is so good at cornerback typically he isn't targeted all that much, which is why he likes games like Thursday.

The Pro Bowl corner was targeted by rookie Daniel Jones six times in the 35-14 win over the Giants, but he only allowed one catch for eight yards.

The one catch came on the first play of the game.

"He threw at me the first play," Gilmore said. "I'm like, 'OK, it's going to be this type of game.' So, I was happy he kept throwing. Just keep making plays."

The veteran cornerback finished with an interception and also contributed to another when John Simon picked off a pass that Gilmore got his hands on. He likes when the ball is thrown his way.

"It's fun," Gilmore said. "That's what I like. So, any time he comes at me, I can make plays."

The Patriots had three interceptions in the game and now have 14 for the season, which means they are pace to finish with 37. The most interceptions in the modern era for a team is 39 set by the 1986 49ers. The most for a Patriots team is 31, which they accomplished in 1964.

"Just trying to play good technique, trying to play patient and keep fighting until the end," Gilmore said. "And just knowing routes. And also trusting my teammates. We've got Devin (McCourty), Duron (Harmon), (Patrick) Chung and Terrence (Brooks), those guys back there, we can really trust them, trust where their help is at and just try to make plays. It makes my job easier because I've got guys around me that I trust, and I play fast from doing that."

Bill Belichick seems to love having Gilmore on his team every single day.

"He does such a great job playing the ball and had some good breaks," he said. "That last play down the sideline was a really good finish where the receiver had the ball and he got it on the way down, but he had some great pass breakups. I mean, look, he's a very talented player and works extremely hard to prepare for the game, study his opponents and study the passing game that our opponents are going to run. This is a good example here on a short week of how diligent he works and it paid off. He's done a great job for us."

Gilmore appears to be on his way to a second consecutive Pro Bowl, which would coincidentally be the second of his career.
