Former Bruin Colby Cave passes away at age 25

Former Bruins forward Colby Cave died Saturday after suffering a brain bleed earlier this week. He was 25.

His wife, Emily, released the following statement:

"It is with great sadness to share the news that our Colby Cave passed away early this morning. I (Emily) and both our families are in shock but know our Colby was loved dearly by us, his family and friends, the entire hockey community, and many more. We thank everyone for their prayers during this difficult time."

Cave had been airlifted to a Toronto hospital on Tuesday and placed in a medically induced coma following emergency surgery.

The Bruins signed Cave as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and he played his first NHL game with them in December 2017. A year later, on Dec. 17, 2018, he scored his first NHL goal in a 4-0 Bruins win in Montreal. Cave played over 200 games for the AHL Providence Bruins across parts of five seasons and served as an alternate captain for three of them.

Cave was claimed off waivers by the Edmonton Oilers in January 2019. He played 11 games for the Oilers this season and 44 for their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

"On behalf of the entire Bruins organization I want to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to Colby's family," Bruins president Cam Neely said in one of several statements released by the team. "As an undrafted free agent from Saskatchewan, Colby chose the Bruins and once he came to our organization, he seized the opportunity and showed on and off the ice that he was a special hockey player and person. He was, and will always be a Bruin, and he will be dearly missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know him."
