Bruins injury updates: Latest on Charlie McAvoy, Tuukka Rask

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy provided updates on several injured Bruins ahead of Thursday night's game against the Capitals.

Most notably, top defenseman Charlie McAvoy will miss at least one more game and likely two. McAvoy missed Tuesday's game against the Flyers with an upper-body injury. Cassidy said he is "feeling better" but that he's back in Boston now.

He's unlikely to travel for Saturday's game in Philadelphia, but could be an option when the Bruins return to Boston for Sunday night's game against the Capitals, depending on how he progresses between now and then.

Goalie Tuukka Rask (upper body) also remains out for Thursday night. Cassidy said he's been getting work in with the team -- which is part of the reason he traveled on this road trip -- and classified it as a "day-to-day" situation.

Jeremy Swayman will get his second straight start in goal after stopping 40 of the 42 shots he faced in a victorious NHL debut Tuesday night. If Rask and Jaroslav Halak (COVID-19 protocol) still aren't back by the weekend, Swayman and Dan Vladar would split the two weekend games.

Cassidy also relayed that forward Trent Frederic is questionable for Thursday night. He's under the weather and experiencing some flu-like symptoms, but Cassidy said it is not COVID-related.

On the longer-term injury front, Cassidy reiterated that Brandon Carlo (upper body) is still considered "week-to-week." He also said that Ondrej Kase continues to skate on-and-off and that a program has been set up for him, but that they won't have a better idea of when he might return to game action until he's able to practice with the team.
