After reportedly signing Erik Haula and Tomas Nosek earlier Wednesday afternoon, the Bruins are now adding even more forward depth by signing Nick Foligno.
The Athletic's Michael Russo was first to report Foligno "has chosen" Boston, and Foligno himself then confirmed the news during an appearance on TSN. The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta reports it is a two-year deal, and TSN's Darren Dreger reports the average annual value will be in the high $3 million per year range.
UPDATE: The Bruins have officially announced the Foligno signing for two years with an average annual value of $3.8 million.
Foligno, 33, is a physical, gritty winger who has always been strong defensively. In his prime, he had quite of offensive pop, putting up 51 points in 2016-17 and a career-high 73 in 2014-15. He has settled in a little under half a point per game in recent years, though, and had 20 points (7 goals, 13 assists) in 49 games last season.
Foligno spent nine years with the Columbus Blue Jackets and was their captain from 2015 on before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs this past season for a first-round pick.
Foligno said on TSN that he spoke to Patrice Bergeron as well as Don Sweeney, and he also cited the fact that his daughter's life was saved at Boston Children's Hospital.
With Foligno, Haula and Nosek all in, it's fair to wonder if another forward is on his way out. The Bruins would appear to be running low on both cap space and lineup spots.
