Capitals forward Tom Wilson has been known as the dirtiest player in the NHL for years, and he added to his reputation Friday night when he drilled Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo in the head.
At the end of a shift that saw him go back and forth with Trent Frederic on a couple hard, clean hits, Wilson lined up Carlo in the corner from a good dozen feet away and finished with a high arm and hands through Carlo's forearm and into the side of his head, smashing Carlo's head into the glass.
Carlo had to be helped off the ice with an obvious head injury and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Making the whole situation even worse was stunning incompetence from the refs, who somehow didn't even call a minor penalty on Wilson, never mind a major and game misconduct.
Wilson has been suspended four times for bad hits in his career, most recently for 20 games in Oct. 2018 for a hit to the head of St. Louis' Oskar Sundqvist. The suspension ultimately ended after 16 games upon appeal.
You would expect Wilson will be hearing from the Department of Player Safety after this hit, but you never really know with this league.
The hit marks the second dirty play by a Capitals player in this two-game series, after Alex Ovechkin speared Trent Frederic in the groin during Wednesday's game. Ovechkin was fined $5,000.
