We learned last week that Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has reportedly been gauging the trade value of goalie Tuukka Rask.
The assumption was that if things got serious enough, Rask at some point would have to provide the Bruins with a list of teams he would accept a trade to, as his contract was believed to have a partial no-movement clause.
But on Sunday night, an interesting nugget regarding Rask’s contract was revealed. According to OHL Writers’ Dominic Tiano, Rask’s no-movement clause does not carry into the final year of his contract and actually expires this Friday, the same day free agency begins.
CapFriendly confirmed Tiano’s report, adding that Rask did have an eight-team trade list from 2017-19 and a 15-team list for the past year.
That means if the Bruins were to wait until Friday to trade Rask, they could trade him to any team. If they were to trade him before then, it would have to be to one of the 15 teams on his list.
If the Bruins actually do move forward with the idea of trading Rask, they still may want to do so before Friday. The NHL Draft is Tuesday and Wednesday, so if there were going to be draft picks for this year involved, it would need to happen then.
If they did wait until Friday, things would have to be finalized quickly if they plan to go out and sign another goalie in free agency.
Of course, the Bruins could obviously decide to just not trade Rask and go into next season with the same goaltending situation -- a Rask-Jaroslav Halak platoon -- as this past season.
