The Celtics may have been engaged with the Nets in discussions about landing Kevin Durant. But that doesn't mean the two sides are talking now.
Boston's reported trade offer to the Nets for Durant is "likely weeks old," according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. The Celtics reportedly offered Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and a draft pick for Durant's services.
Durant asked the Nets for a trade June 30, one day before the start of NBA free agency.
It would make sense if the Celtics' conversations with Brooklyn happened closer to that date. There's been little action on the Durant trade front in recent weeks, with one identified suitor, the Suns, probably removing themselves from the mix. They matched the Pacers' $133 million offer sheet for Deandre Ayton, meaning they can't turn around and trade him this offseason.
It's worth noting that Windhorst made his remark about the Celtics and Durant on an Arizona sports radio station.
Later in the interview, Windhorst said the Nets are content "riding it out" with Durant if they don't receive a proposal to their liking. Durant is signed to a four-year, $196 million deal.
Short of a holdout, Durant may have little recourse once the season starts. NBA training camp begins Sept. 26.
The Nets are reportedly seeking an astronomical package for Durant, which makes sense, since he's one of the greatest players ever and signed long-term. Brooklyn rejected the Celtics' offer and asked for Marcus Smart to be included, reports The Athletic's Shams Charania.
We may have to wait a couple of more weeks to find out the Celtics' next move. In the meantime, feelings are hurt.
