Brad Stevens has made a move for a backup big man.
Mike Muscala is on his way to Boston in exchange for Justin Jackson and two second-round picks, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. The Celtics later announced the trade.
Purely from a talent acquisition standpoint, the Celtics made out great. Second-round picks don't pan out often, especially from a long-term view, and Jackson isn't exactly a big-time role player. Muscala, on the other hand, provides length and long-range shooting.
From a fit/need perspective, the Celtics also did well. Of the two areas they could use some help with, they chose scoring off the bench over a defense-first big man with this move. That's not to say Muscala can't defend — he's solid — but he definitely wasn't the best option in that department.
Still, solid defense paired with 39.4% shooting from deep this season (37.9% career) provides the Celtics with what they need: A big who can help on a night-to-night basis when everyone is healthy and also fill in on a larger scale when Robert Williams and/or Al Horford are unavailable.
