Who will start for the Patriots at quarterback Week 1 against the Dolphins -- Mac Jones or Cam Newton?

How will Newton's five days outside the building impact things, if at all?

These are the questions everyone in New England and around the NFL are asking.

ESPN's Adam Schefter joined Gresh and Keefe as part of the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon and gave his thoughts.

“Here is what I would say on Mac Jones and Trey Lance and Justin Fields, I think it is a similar storyline in all cities, right? Their time is coming," he said. "It’s coming probably sooner rather than later. Is that going to be Week 1, 2, 3? When? Don’t know. Maybe the decision’s not made yet in all of the places. The Bears have said [Andy] Dalton will start Week 1, so it certainly seems that Justin Fields is out of the mix for a potential starter for Week 1. But, we have not heard a final decision in New England or San Francisco.

“And I think when Cam is out of the building for five days this week, it just gives Mac the chance to go out there and continue to impress them, which he has all summer. So, is that enough to dislodge Cam? I don’t know the answer to that yet. I just know he’s in the conversation. It’s a question you’re asking, they’re probably asking, it’s a question everybody is asking.

“The only thing I can tell you is, we know that his time is coming. We just don’t know exactly when that’s going to be.”

Newton is scheduled to return on Thursday where the Patriots will be hosting the Giants for the second of two joint practices.
