the greg hill show: bill belichick joins the show following the patriots 27-17 loss to chiefs
The Patriots got back to their losing ways on Sunday at the hands of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. After a 27-17 defeat in Foxborough, with Kansas City fans and Swifties alike in attendance, New England now sits at 3-11 on their 2023 campaign.
Given the Patriots’ disappointing season, reports about head coach Bill Belichick’s job security with the team have begun to run rampant over the last week-plus. Last Monday, NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran insinuated that a decision to move on from Belichick was made as early as Week 10, and ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that the “expectation” in Foxborough is a mutual parting of ways of sorts at the end of the season.
On Saturday evening, however, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport poured some cold water on the rumors and reported that the head coach's fate has “not yet been decided.”
Point being? The rumor mill is spinning faster than NFL Draft simulators this time of year, and Bill Belichick was asked about all of it on his weekly appearance with WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show:
“Nothing’s changed,” the head coach responded when asked if he can say that a decision has not been made about his future. “I’m going to keep– We’ve got Denver this week and we’ll do all we can to get the team ready to play well against Denver.”
So is it frustrating hearing all of the noise? And to not be able to respond to it the way you truly want to?
“I mean, I don’t know,” Belichick explained. “I don’t sit around and listen to talk radio and read stuff every day, so. I’m going to do what I do and prepare the team to get ready for Denver.”
The head coach went on to say that he's spoken to the team about the rumors and stories surrounding his future with the Patriots.
“We have open conversations about it.”
Belichick was then asked, given Robert Kraft’s tight-lipped nature on the matter, if he believes the Patriots’ owner has had his back and if he thinks that he has support from the organization:
“I think any questions you have for Mr. Kraft, you should ask Mr. Kraft.”
Does he want keep coaching in New England beyond 2023?
“Yeah, I’m not getting into the past, the future, anything else. I’m getting ready for Denver this week.”
Belichick also spoke about J.C. Jackson’s absence from Sunday’s game, their mysterious fourth quarter clock management, and more on Monday’s edition of WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show. You can listen to the full interview here.
