Six weeks of 2023 NFL action are in the books and clear statistical trends have taken hold across the league. As such, WEEI.com will check in each week through the remainder of the season to see how the Patriots (1-5) are doing statistically in a variety of areas, both on a team level and as individuals.

Pats’ stats analysis: New England is one of the worst teams in the NFL by almost any and every measure. But one area where Bill Belichick’s team does rank highly is in terms of red zone success on both sides of the ball. The Patriots have the No. 7 red zone defense after holding the Raiders to just one touchdown in six trips inside the 20 in Sunday’s loss in Las Vegas. On the flipside, the Patriots actually have the league’s No. 3 red zone offense, now scoring on 70-percent of trips inside the 20 after Ezekiel Elliott’s 2-yard score against the Raiders. Of course the Patriots have only been in the red zone 10 times in six games, only the Steelers having fewer would-be scoring chances. By comparison the Dolphins and 49ers lead the NFL with 26 red zone trips each through six games. … Even through key injuries, New England still has the No. 10 overall defense in the NFL. … The biggest issue for the team is points. The Patriots rank 31st in the NFL in point differential, ahead of only the Giants. That’s thanks to an offense that ranks 31st in points score and a defense that is tied for 24th in points allowed, saddled with the points that can be directly attributed to turnovers by the offense. … Kendrick Bourne’s relatively big day in Las Vegas has now established him as New England’s clear No. 1 receiver, ranking tied for 22nd in the NFL in targets, tied for 28th in receptions, 40th in yards and 64th in average. … Mac Jones is one of just five quarterbacks with more interceptions than touchdown passes at this point, a big reason why he has the 30th passer rating in the NFL.
