Now that Mac Jones is a member of the Patriots, everyone is doing their best to get to know him and learn more about what he is as a quarterback.

After all, he's likely to be the Patriots' QB of the future.

One of the people who have grown to know him the best in recent years is Steve Sarkisian, who was the offensive coordinator at Alabama, but is now the head coach at the University of Texas.

Sarkisian spoke to NBC Sports' Phil Perry about Jones, including his temper and what he's like as a teammate.

Jones had the nickname McEnroe early in his career at Alabama after John McEnroe because of his love for tennis combined with his temper.

“The thing I liked about Mac is the temper more came out when he made a mistake," Sarkisian said. "It was almost like he was getting mad at himself, but out loud. Most people [say it in their own head], he was yelling, ‘Dang it, Mac’ out loud. As he grew and as his mistakes started to lessen and he started to play at a higher level, that demand started to spread to his teammates and the expectation he had for them — were they in the right protection, or were we at the right depth on the route, were we in the right split or in the right personnel grouping?

"I think that is where the respect came from his teammates. They knew how much work he put in to get to get himself to that point, and he wanted to make sure those around him were at the same level he was at.”

Over his time at the school, Jones became one of the best teammates on the team for a variety of reasons.

“Mac is an awesome teammate," Sarkisian said. "I think he has a great deal of respect from his teammates. That came — A, perseverance. They knew how hard Mac worked. He did not come into Alabama as a finished product. He had to work to get to the point where he’s at, whether that was physically, mentally, just a maturity standpoint. They saw the work ethic. I think two, the patience. And I think three, they saw a guy seize the opportunity. When his number was called, he maximized the opportunity and played at a high level.

"On the flip note of that, he’s an awesome teammate for others. When a guy made a mistake or a guy was down, Mac was a perfectionist. He wanted things right. He was demanding, but also he was the first guy to pat them on the back and pick him up and let him know, ‘Hey, you’re going to get another opportunity next series.’ There was a nice feel for Mac with how to be a really good teammate, but also I think his teammates really respected him for his journey, the work that he put in, his preparation that he put in and then ultimately the performance when the time came.”

Jones should get to work with the Patriots at rookie minicamp, which is scheduled for May 14-16.
