The Patriots are always doing their due diligence on players to be ready if a need arises, even this late in the season.
According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the team plans on having two players in for COVID testing and then eventual workouts -- wide receiver Devin Smith and defensive back Dayan G. Lake.
Smith, 28, has played for the Jets and Cowboys in his career. Known for his speed, he's appeared in 18 games and has totaled 15 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns.
Lake is an undrafted rookie out of BYU, who the Patriots met with prior to the draft this spring. He was a four-year starter at the school and has some versatility in the secondary.
These players could be potential additions to the practice squad if things go well.
