Patriots coach returns to team after 'medical scare'

Patriots defensive coordinator Terrell Williams has returned to the sidelines to coach Mike Vrabel’s defense after missing organized team activities and minicamp following a “medical scare” earlier this year.

“Big T is here, ready to go. He’s been out on the field with us the last couple of days. Players were excited to see him,” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said Tuesday. “I was excited to see him. We’ll move forward.”

Williams, 51, participated in the earlier portions of the offseason program remotely, from his house in Michigan. He hasn’t disclosed the details of what kept him away from Foxboro, other than citing his personal health.

He first joined Vrabel to coach the Tennessee Titans in 2018, and helped lead the team to the AFC Championship game in 2019. Vrabel spoke highly of Williams’ impact on the entire team and coaching staff:

“He’s the only D-line coach that I’ve had. Just a great reach to every player on the football team,” he said.

“[He’s] got a great perspective and I think it’s just helped me personally to reach guys that I haven’t been able to reach. He’s been a great mentor as well. I think our guys have responded very well. I think his units have always been prepared and productive, no matter who he was coaching,” he added.

Vrabel joked that Williams isn’t on “any restrictions,” including PUP or NFI.

The Patriots kick off training camp on Wednesday, July 23rd.
Several practices, including the first, are open to the public.
