jones and mego: Adam Jones has questions about Eliot Wolf and Alex Van Pelt
After leaving his perch as the Patriots' defensive line coach to become their defensive coordinator, DeMarcus Covington's former position with the team has already been filled.
According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, New England has hired former Packers' assistant Jerry Montgomery to be their next defensive line coach.
Montgomery interviewed for the position on Saturday, per Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard. His hire comes amid a reshuffle of Green Bay's defensive staff after they poached head coach Jeff Hafley from Boston College to be their defensive coordinator last week.
Working with the Packers has been Montgomery's lone stop in the NFL on his coaching journey. He started as a defensive front assistant in 2015 before becoming their defensive line coach in 2018. Head coach Matt LeFleur then added running game coordinator to his job responsibilities in 2022.
Prior to his nine years in Green Bay, Montgomery coached in the college ranks since 2003 with stops at Iowa, North Iowa Community College, Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Indiana, Michigan, and Oklahoma.
Montgomery is the third coach in the Patriots' flurry of hires (or pending hires) since parting ways with Bill Belichick who has direct ties to their director of scouting Eliot Wolf, joining Alex Van Pelt and Ben McAdoo. All three coaches were on the Packers staff during his time in Green Bay's front office.
Wolf, who by all accounts is serving as New England's de facto general manager post-Belichick, has been heavily involved in their coaching search alongside Jerod Mayo so far. As you can see, his fingerprints are already all over the new staff.
