The Patriots have made a minor roster move a few days before their preseason opener.
Running back Tyler Gaffney has been released to make room for safety Malik Gant.
Gant is familiar to New England, as he was an undrafted rookie free agent in 2019, but was injured in the preseason and spent the entire year on injured reserve. He was released in late July of last year.
Gaffney was more a training camp body at running back this spring since the group was missing a few players, but now that all players at the position are participating in practice there's no longer a need.
New England will host the Washington Football Team Thursday night.
