The Patriots have a backup quarterback again.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, New England has signed Bailey Zappe to their 53-man roster.

Zappe had originally been waived by the Patriots during their final roster cuts, a move that shocked many across the NFL. He wound up clearing waivers and signing to the team’s practice squad. Now, all signs point to him backing up Mac Jones on Sunday.

In a corresponding move, the Patriots released quarterback Matt Corral, who they signed off of waivers to their 53-man roster just nine days ago. Corral missed Friday’s Patriots practice for a “non-injury related” reason.

New England welcomes the Eagles (and Tom Brady) to Gillette Stadium on Sunday for their 2023 regular season opener. we’ll have you covered here on WEEI.com for all of it.
