6 rings: Does the departure of Bill O'Brien put the Patriots in a better or worse situation?
The Patriots will be interviewing two Los Angeles Rams assistant coaches for their now-vacant offensive coordinator position this week.
After ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported early Sunday morning that LA's tight ends coach (and former New England assistant) Nick Caley will interview for the job, SI’s Albert Breer added that the team will also interview current Rams passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson.
Robinson played quarterback at Oklahoma State from 2005-2009 and was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons as a backup QB in the NFL, including three with the Cincinnati Bengals.
After almost five years out of football, Robinson began coaching under Sean McVay with the Rams in 2019. He began as their assistant quarterbacks coach ('19), and has also served as assistant wide receivers coach (2020), and most recently as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The OSU alum has spent his entire coaching career with Los Angeles.
The Patriots' search for a new coordinator is in part due to 2023 OC Bill O'Brien's departure to Ohio State for the same role. While former New England play-caller Josh McDaniels has been linked to the position, it was reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Sunday that there's a chance he follows Bill Belichick to Atlanta, should he end up there.
Caley will interview on Monday with Robinson to follow on Tuesday. These are the first two reported meetings in New England's search for an offensive coordinator.
