Just a day after welcoming safeties coach Brian Belichick back on board, the Patriots will be retaining another assistant coach in the secondary.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino will continue in his role under new head coach Jerod Mayo and defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington.

Pellegrino (30) has been on the staff since 2015, initially hired as a coaching assistant before earning promotion to cornerbacks coach in 2019. Notably, he was coaching the cornerbacks when Stephon Gilmore won NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

This upcoming season marks Pellegrino’s 10th with the Patriots, during which he has contributed to two Super Bowl victories.

With the myriad changes made to Mayo’s staff, the defensive side of the ball remains essentially unchanged. Of the four reported hires – Covington, Belichick, Pellegrino, and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery – Montgomery is the sole addition from outside the organization.

Pellegrino’s comeback coincides with the expected return of Christian Gonzalez and Marcus Jones, both of whom saw their promising seasons cut short in 2023.
