Bill Belichick has led the Patriots to six Super Bowl wins and nine Super Bowl appearances. But one former rival thinks this season’s turnaround amounts to Belichick’s best job yet.

On ESPN’s “Get Up” Monday, Rex Ryan was full of praise for Belichick, with whom he sparred for eight seasons as head coach of the Jets and Bills.

“Bill Belichick, this is his best job he’s ever done coaching,” Ryan said. “It’s not just, by the way, all coaching. It was what he [did] in the offseason that makes Belichick different. He put in $160-something million dollars. We’ve seen [Matthew] Judon. This defense is doing great because of having Judon in there. You get Kendrick Bourne who’s finally showing up. Where the hell did he come from? That was a free agent signing. Hunter Henry, he’s playing like the tight end everybody thought he could be.”

While it’s a stretch to say the Patriots’ 6-4 start is Belichick’s coaching masterpiece, last offseason might have been his best as a general manager — right up there with 2007. With the exception of Jonnu Smith, all of the Patriots’ major free agent signings have hit. As Ryan mentioned, Judon is maybe their best player on defense, and Bourne and Henry are staples in the passing game. Both players caught touchdowns Sunday.

This might have also been Belichick’s best draft ever, provided Mac Jones continues to emerge under center. As an added bonus, his Alabama teammate Christian Barmore has become a factor on the defensive line as well. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for two touchdowns.

Last week, Ryan, a critic of Jones early in the season, admitted the Patriots are a “dangerous” team. They’re playing their best football as the second half begins. Former quarterback Dan Orlovsky went as far as to say it’s “not hyperbolic” to believe the Patriots can “go to the Super Bowl.”

If that happens, then yes: this season would certainly be in the running for Belichick’s best coaching performance ever.
