What could have been… apparently.
Although we now know that Aaron Rodgers was traded to the Jets this offseason, it sounds like that wasn't always in the cards after all. According to WFAN’s Craig Carton, the Patriots submitted a trade offer to Green Bay for Rodgers' services - before he ultimately was sent to New York.
6 rings: Optimism remains high surrounding the Patriots post-minicamp
Carton said this on Fox Sports’ The Carton Show:
“Aaron Rodgers almost wasn’t a Jet. The New England Patriots made an offer to the Green Bay Packers to get Aaron Rodgers and when Aaron Rodgers heard it, his agent said ‘no we ain’t playing for New England, we want to be a Jet.’”
Carton continued, “Those snakes in the grass in New England can never be trusted, and I want to thank my man Aaron Rodgers for recognizing you don’t go play for Satan.”
It was reported this offseason that the Patriots had offered quarterback Mac Jones in trade discussions to "multiple teams". Perhaps Green Bay was one of them.
Belichick has long fawned over Aaron Rodgers as a player, once telling him that he's "the best." Here's what he said of the star quarterback after Green Bay beat his Patriots last October:
“In the end, Rodgers was just too good. He made some throws that only Rodgers can make. We had pretty good coverage on some of those and he was just too smart, too good, too accurate. In the end he got us."
New England will now face off against Rodgers twice this season. The Patriots will head to New York on September 24th for their first matchup, and then welcome the Jets to Foxborough on January 7th for their season finale.
