After having the worst tight end production in the NFL for two straight seasons, there’s no question the Patriots will be in the market to add at least one this offseason.
And it likely will be a veteran following selecting Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene in the third round last year. And the way the offseason is looking, it might be a good year to be needing a tight end.
While the free agent names aren’t all that enticing, besides Hunter Henry, Jared Cook and Jonnu Smith, there could be a few tight ends potentially traded.
On Monday, ESPN published a story where each all 32 NFL Nation reporters selected a player who would benefit from a move away from their current team. Of those 32, seven were tight ends, who could be traded or are free agents.
Those seven players were: Evan Engram (Giants), Zach Ertz (Eagles), Jesse James (Lions), Kyle Rudolph (Vikings), Ian Thomas (Panthers), Cook (Saints), and Gerald Everett (Rams).
The Patriots will definitely be paying attention to these seven players and their situations. Of that list, Rudolph, Ertz and Everett stand out the most.
Rudolph’s name came up a bunch relating to the Patriots in 2019 before he was signed to a contract extension. Ertz is intriguing, but potentially could be involved in a trade with Carson Wentz and then Everett, a second-round pick, is a free agent.
Clearly, the Patriots need to upgrade the tight end position and it seems it may not be a bad offseason to do it.
