The Red Sox have made a trade ahead of Friday's MLB Trade Deadline.
Nationals All-Star outfielder Kyle Schwarber is coming to Boston in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Aldo Ramirez. To make room on the 40-man roster for him, Brandon Workman has been designated for assignment.
The 28-year-old has played 72 games for the Nationals in left field this season and the lefty hitter is batting .253 with 25 homers and 53 RBI.
Schwarber is currently on the injured list with a strained hamstring, but is expected to return sometime around mid-August. He was the hottest hitter in baseball at the time he got hurt, hitting an absurd 16 home runs in an 18-game span from June 12-29.
While he's played just left field this season, it's likely the Red Sox will at least consider giving him a shot at first base and other outfield positions since left field isn't a natural fit onto the roster. He could also DH.
Schwarber spent the first six years of his career with the Cubs and this is his first with the Nats, also his first year making the All-Star team. He signed a one-year deal last offseason, so he will be a free agent after the season.
Meanwhile, Ramirez is a top-15 pitching prospect and made eight starts with Low-A Salem this season. He has a 2.03 ERA.
