Coming into his start Thursday, the most home runs any player had against Gerrit Cole was four. Oddly enough, two of the players who have that many against him are now his teammates — Matt Carpenter and Joey Gallo. Former Mets first baseman Lucas Duda also hit four home runs against Cole throughout his career.
There was a fourth player who had that many, but that hitter is now in a category all his own. Rafael Devers golfed his fifth nuke vs. Cole in the third inning of Thursday’s game.
But that wasn’t enough. Devers launched another in the fifth inning to pull two ahead of Carpenter, Gallo and Duda.

Those home runs bring Devers’ career batting average against Cole to .320 (8-for-25). Of the 19 home runs he’s hit this season, 16 have come against right-handed pitching.
