Another top prospect is joining the Red Sox. As first reported by Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Boston is calling up outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, affectionately nicknamed "The Password."
Wilyer Abreu, who has been dealing with a calf injury, is heading to the injured list in a corresponding move, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo. (UPDATE: The Red Sox made both moves official later Thursday afternoon.)
Garcia, 22, is ranked as the Red Sox' No. 3 prospect by MILB.com. The right-handed bat leads Triple-A Worcester with 17 home runs and 56 RBIs in 66 games this season while hitting .303 with a .932 OPS.
Boston made another roster move earlier Thursday, designating first baseman Abraham Toro for assignment and calling up infielder David Hamilton. Toro was made expendable by the recent signing of Nathaniel Lowe, who now figures to get the bulk of playing time at first base.
It remains to be seen when Garcia will make his big-league debut and how much he might play. Even with Abreu and Rob Refsnyder on the IL, the Red Sox' outfield and DH spots remain crowded thanks to the presence of Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Roman Anthony and Masataka Yoshida.
The Red Sox begin a four-game series against the Yankees in the Bronx Thursday night.
