We found out Wednesday that centerfielder Jarren Duran will be joining the Red Sox in the Bronx to open the second half. It appears he won't be the only top prospect getting called up.
According to WBZ's Dan Roche, pitcher Tanner Houck will also be joining Boston for its series-opener against the Yankees Thursday night.
Houck, 25, is a little more familiar to Red Sox fans, as he has already made six major-league appearances, whereas Duran's first appearance will be his MLB debut.
Houck made three appearances and two starts with the Red Sox earlier this season, going 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. He was excellent in three big-league starts at the end of last season, going 3-0 while allowing just one earned run in 17 innings (0.53 ERA).
Houck hasn't been great in six starts for Triple-A Worcester this season, going 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA. It's unclear if the plan is to use Houck out of the bullpen or as a starter, but it's worth noting that Houck has not pitched more than four innings in any of his last five starts since returning from an injury.
