The Red Sox are designating catcher Kevin Plawecki for assignment. MassLive was first to report the transaction.

The 31-year-old Plawecki has been with the Red Sox since signing with the team prior to the 2020 season, replacing Sandy Leon as the club's backup catcher.

A clubhouse leader, Plawecki exceeded offensive expectations in both 2020 and 2021, hitting .342 and .287, respectively. He totaled an .857 OPS in '20 and .737 OPS the season after.

This season, however, was a bit of a struggle for the former first-round pick, hitting .217 with a .574 OPS while catching just four the 44 attempted base stealers.

While it was believed Plawecki - who was slated to be eligible for free agency at the conclusion of 2022 - would be seeing additional playing time after Christian Vazquez was dealt, the emergence of both Reese McGuire and Connor Wong altered those plans.
