When it comes to risk vs. reward, the signing of Michael Feliz seems light on the former and potentially heavy on the latter.
The Red Sox have inked the 28-year-old reliever to a minor-league deal, with the plan to send Feliz to Triple-A Worcester.
Feliz has 222 big-leagues appearances under his belt, including a three-season stint with Houston that coincided with Alex Cora's time as a bench coach with the Astros.
He began the 2021 season with the Pirates, pitching to a 2.35 ERA in seven games before being released by Pittsburgh. The Reds served as his next team, using Feliz in nine games before the righty landed on the 60-day injured list with an elbow strain.
Feliz has long been known for the ability to get swings and misses thanks to a mid-90's fastball that he throws about 61 percent of the time. His secondary pitch is a slider, with a rarely-used changeup occasionally entering into the equation.
Feliz has averaged 10 or more strikeouts-per-nine innings in the six seasons leading into 2021. The problem has been his control, along with the inability to consistently get batters out. His career ERA is 5.38.
